That Crazy Blog about stuff you don't usually blog about meme... Education

From Jaded Phoenix 62. Know its taken me a while to get round to it, but here it is.

Also the question again, as I've only had 2 in total:

"Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it."

"Actually, and I know its taken me ages to post, I was wondering about your education?"

So... My education
Its not really that complex or long winded.

At 5 I was sent to St Josephs RC Primary School.
Thats right, Roman Catholic school. My Parents wanted me to go to a religous schoold because they couldn't afford Public, and State Schools in Droitwich where really bad. RC schools had a pretty good rep back then.

So I had my basic lessons throughout the 7 years there. I was on the younger end of my year, being born at the end of june and all. I was also given a heavy dose of Christianity. And something I've since learnt, Roman Catholocisim is the boring version of what happened. All very stoic and ritulistic and god damn boring. My parents have never been overly religious. My mums RC and my Dad CoE theoretically, but they never forced me to go to church. I did for a while, as something to do. I was an alter boy, and possibly the worst one ever. I don't remember much of Primary School, I've blocked most of it, due to the amount I was bullied. I was slow on the uptake with alot of practical tasks. Being left handed, I'd have to take what I was tought, and reverse it in my head so that my hands would work properly. So I couldn't tie my own laces till I was 10, or a tie for that matter. Also due to my double jointed hips and knees, I was crap at sports. I loathed P.E, I was always the last to be chosen for anything, and this extended into the social aspects of school. I became easy pickings for everything and everybody. This destroyed my confidence and other tasks where slow on the uptake. Swimming, riding my bike. Spelling and Grammer.
So at 12/13 I went to high school. Because I went to an RC Primary, I was entitled to go to a RC High School.

Blessed Edward Oldcorne RC Highschool in Worcester.
I hated it. Nothing changed on the bullying front, apart from a whole new set of people to bully me. 1993 was the year, and this was the first year of Keystage 3. A sylabus the teachers wern't familiar with, and so we where the guinee pig year. I think I did okay. I threw myself into the Sciences. Excelling at Physics, Math and Chemistry. I kinda coasted through my other subjects, doing as little as was needed, but I still go placed in top sets for everything, due to how the scheduling system worked. For my GCSE's I took Double Award Science, Math, History, R.E, German, French (which was compulsary, even with a second language), English and English lit. I also took CDT, but never took the paper as I fell so far beind in that it wasn't worth it. All I did during this time was study, wargame and find music, being in my first couple of bands at this age and learning the guitar. I passed my G.C.S.E's and went onto college.

Worcester College of Technology.
This was an expierence. People will say the jump between School and College is nothing compared to College to Uni. Worcester Tech took the approach of lengthing the gap between school and college to shorten the Uni Jump. In short, I had alot of freedom. No one chasing me endlessly for work, no bells to signal class ending/starting. And we where right next to the town center.
I went the A-Level route in my first year, taking Math Pure and Applied (mechanics), Chemistry and Physics. And this is where I fell down. I didn't think I needed to do the work, and boy was I wrong. The freedom I had to study at my own leasure meant I spent alot of time doing nothing, apart from getting an unhealthy addiction to coffee shops. I got barely passing grades for these subjects in the first year. I quite Chemistry early on as I hated titrations, which was a good part of the course, and took up Philosaphy, which I soon dropped as it was a 1 year a-level and everyone out-argued/debated me, making me feel like a moron. I also did Law briefly, but realised I had no interest in the subject.

At the end of that first year, I reavaluated my options, and moved onto a B-TEC National Diploma in Music Technology. I thrived on this course. It was all assessment based, no exams. Alot of it was practical work as well. I learnt alot about Music, the Music Industry, Business skills, and most of the other tools I have today for doing work of any kind. It was a 2 year course, and very well rounded. My second year was tougher as my Depression relapsed, but I came out with very good grades and realising that I did actually have a skill set that not many other people have. I didn't take this to Uni Level, as I couldn't find a course I was happy to get in debt over, my parents couldn't really afford to send me to Uni, at the time Uni's didn't take B-TEC's very seriously, and there was no real solid conversion system. (seriously, one uni was treating someone who got all Distinction on everything as the equivilent as 2 B's at a level, and they wanted another 2 a-levels on top of that, B and above, the course was 30 hours a week as it was,) and my depression at the time just made other factors more complicated.

I breifly took part on the HND course, but got bored, as it was identical to the ND, but you had to remember the math and other things that I had notes for. I had no desire to do EXACTLY the same assignments again, so I skipt out of that.

That was me done for 9 years. 1987-2001. 14 years in the system, and not much to show. Which is why I coasted from low level job to low level job for so long. Having no idea what to do with my life. Moved up to Lancaster, had all the mental health issues come up, go bad, get taken seriously, and start to deal with them.

Now, I've just started another B-TEC in Film and T.V Production at the Lancaster and Morcambe. Its awesome. Yes I have to hang around with people who where born just as I was starting High School. But its a course I can get my teeth into, the format is excellent, and the skills I'm gaining will actually be relevant to any sort of Film career I choose. I do hope to go to Uni off the back of this, as it is something I want to expierence. I've already started looking at a couple of Uni's, but who knows what the future will bring.

To everyone for todays OA epicness. I'm flat out drained, and in a good way.

As I said before, my thanks to everyone who attended. Though I may write the plots which keep you guys entertained, and throw the (hopefully) curve balls to keep you off balance, if it wasn't for you guys, all I'd have is a folder full of printed paper collecting dust in the corner

You all make my vision for the World of Ether come to life and breath. You are the guys that make it tick, as you give me so many ideas to pump into the world, throwing plots till something sticks.

You allow me to pat myself on the back, because once a fortnight, I get to show you my little piece of creativity, and you then go and infuse it with so much more.

So, as much as people insist on not taking it.

Thankyou so much for today, I am happy and relieved that OA finished 2009 on such a high note. Now to start planning for 2010

Response for Verdandielske + Meme question

Just thought I'd repost the meme question here, as I noticed my original has probably been lost under the avalanche of posts generated by this meme

"Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it."

So without further delay

'if you could go anywhere, any time, where would you go?'

This has actually proven quite a tricky one. I've been mulling it over in my head for a couple of days now.
The obvious answer would be 19th Century England. But I'd want to go to so many places. I am in love with that period of history, obviously being into the Steam-Punk movement. But would I want to actually see it. The main thing that appeals to me about that period is just the sheer creativity and 'fuck it' attitude towards trying to find new things.
Some of the crazyiest inventions hark from this time, people where trying anything just to see if it would actually work.
Projects that from our eyes look insane where given complete seriousness.
This is the period of Wylde, Poe and Twain.
Of Darwin and Brunnel. Of the British Empire. To me it signifies a time of wonder and relative innocence, one which was spoilt by World War 1, where all of our inventions and brilliance showed just how well we could kill each other on mass.

But then... thats the romance I have with that time. The reality is much much different. The Abject poverty, class division, lack of social mobility, racism, violence. It would be a culture shock to see what it was actually like, and I'd be hesitant to spoil the nice rosey sheen I can quite happily paint on that period.

So if not then... then when?
I'd probably choose forward. I'd like to see where we as a race are heading, what lessons those in the future will take from us now... where the technology is taking us. And weather we actually become better beings as a race. One take on the Myan calander is that we are cycling towards the end of a great clock that has been the development of Universal Cosciousness. The easiest way to describe this is its something akin to the supercomputer earth is in HitchHikers guide to the galaxy.
We're meant to be in the age of ethics... I wonder what we'll be like out the other side of that.
Also I'd like to see the cool toys that future people have.

On this subject, there has always been a small part of me that wants to wake up in my body 10 years ago. I think thats routed in a pining for a youth thats passed me by, and one spent learning some lessons in a very long and hard route. But I think that would be a post for another time.
So yes, hope that answers the question... sort of.

Live Demonstration Meeting

Hi all

Hope you had a wonderful summer.
*grabs official hat*

Right, this coming wednesday (30th September) we are having a demonstration of Live Role Play up at the Univeristy.
I don't know the exact details of when where, as the President is still waiting to hear those details.
I shall spread the word as soon as I know.

But we still need to sort out what it is we are actually doing for the demonstration.
Lucie has had a few idea, but a larger brainstorming session is needed.

So what I propose is that we meet tommorow (Sunday 26th September) to do just that.

Who'se invited: Anyone with a passion for live, and who, prefrably, can turn up on the wednesday. Though if you can't, don't let it stop you coming along to help plan this little demonstration out. I think its meant to last 10-15 minutes.

The Place: Top Weathspoons at around 1pm.

If you can't make the meet-up, but can make the live demonstration, can you please email myself or Lucie so we can take you into account.

This year we are wanting to pre-plan the roles a little so we know what kit we have, and also to script the demo more so that the show can be more appealing to a large audience.

Cross posting this to the Fourms and the mailing list

Regards, and hope to see you soon
Martin
Live Rep and Safety Officer

Well moved all my stuff around so I now occupy 2 rooms.

Took 3 days to do all in all. Well, 2 and half, I slept through most of thursday due to a bout of unexpected tiredness.

Just a few things to find homes for, and a whole load of clothes to wash. But otherwise everything is in place, dusted (mostly) and vaccumed.
Things are actually in a state where I'd be okay for a friend to pop round for a brew and a natter. Weather this happens or not is by the by. But its good to have things in such a state that I'd be comfortable with that happening.

On a random side note, I had a chav masturbating in the back garden on wednesday night. Sod had scarpered by the time the police arrived, but hey. One of those things to add to my growing list of life 'expierence'.

I'm not making this stuff up.

Jam
